You need three numbers to properly measure your garage springs: Wire Size, Inside Diameter , and Length. Here is a video demonstration.
1. Wire Size: Mark the length of 20 coils, convert to a decimal, and divide by 20. Or use the chart in the video to easily convert it.
2. Inside Diamter (ID): Measure the diameter on the INSIDE of the torsion spring tube (coils only). Typically 2", but can be 1.75".
3. Length: Measure the length of the coils only (don't include the length of the two end cones).
Every garage door part purchase includes a 7-day return policy. We can only accept items in their original, unused condition. A 10% restocking fee will apply. If you paid a delivery fee on your order, we do not refund this portion. To process a return, please message or email us with details. We will arrange pickup and confirm your refund amount.
Note: Torsion springs are very exact measurements. If you aren't sure how to measure your current spring, or don't know how to calculate the needed spring sizes for your door's weight, consider contacting a professional garage door repair company instead. We recommend PROxOKC.com

When it comes to securing your garage door components, the choice of fasteners plays a crucial role in ensuring safety, stability, and longevity. From lag screws to self-tapping screws and other specialized fasteners, each type serves a specific purpose in the assembly and maintenance of garage doors in Oklahoma City and Edmond. Let's dive into the world of garage door fasteners to understand their differences, applications, and importance.
1. Lag Screws:
Lag screws, also known as lag bolts, are heavy-duty fasteners commonly used in garage door installations. These screws have coarse threads and a hexagonal head, allowing for strong grip and easy tightening using a wrench or socket. Lag screws are ideal for attaching tracks, brackets, and other heavy-duty components to framing or solid surfaces.
2. Self-Tapping Screws:
Self-tapping screws are designed to create their own threads as they are driven into materials like metal or wood. They come in various head styles such as flat, pan, and hex, each suited for different applications. In garage doors, self-tapping screws are often used for attaching components like weather stripping, hinges, trim pieces, and decorative elements.
3. Machine Screws:
Machine screws have a uniform diameter and thread pitch, and they require a pre-drilled hole for installation. These screws are commonly used with nuts or threaded inserts to secure hardware components to garage doors. Machine screws are available in different materials like stainless steel, brass, and zinc-plated steel, offering durability and corrosion resistance.
4. Wood Screws:
As the name suggests, wood screws are designed for use with wooden materials. They have coarse threads and a sharp point for easy penetration into wood without the need for pre-drilling. Wood screws are often used in garage doors for attaching panels, trim boards, and wooden framing components.
5. Bolts and Nuts:
In addition to screws, garage doors may also utilize bolts and nuts for assembly and reinforcement. Bolts are threaded rods with a head at one end, while nuts are used to secure bolts in place. This combination provides a strong and adjustable connection, making it suitable for critical components like torsion springs, pulleys, and cable drums.
6. Rivets:
Rivets are permanent fasteners used in garage doors for joining metal parts together. They consist of a cylindrical shaft with a head on one end and a tail on the other. Rivets are installed by deforming the tail to create a secure connection. They are commonly found in stiles, brackets, and structural elements of garage doors.
Choosing the Right Fasteners:
Selecting the appropriate fasteners for your garage door project depends on several factors including the type of material being fastened, load-bearing requirements, environmental conditions, and aesthetic preferences. It's crucial to use high-quality fasteners that are compatible with the door's design and construction to ensure safety and reliability.
Maintenance and Inspection:
Regular maintenance and inspection of fasteners are essential to keep your garage door functioning smoothly and safely. Check for loose or corroded fasteners, replace damaged ones promptly, and tighten any loose connections to prevent structural issues and potential accidents.:
In conclusion, garage door fasteners such as lag screws, self-tapping screws, machine screws, wood screws, bolts, nuts, and rivets are integral components that contribute to the strength, stability, and functionality of garage door systems in Oklahoma City (OKC) and Edmond. By understanding their characteristics and applications, you can make informed decisions when it comes to installation, repair, and maintenance tasks, ensuring a secure and reliable garage door operation for years to come.

When it comes to maintaining and repairing your garage door springs, having the right tools is crucial for safety and efficiency. In the vibrant communities of OKC and Edmond, where homeowners take pride in DIY projects, understanding the importance of using proper tools like winding bars can prevent accidents and ensure successful garage door repairs. In this article, we'll delve into why winding bars are the preferred choice for winding garage door springs and why they should be an essential part of every local garage door parts toolkit.
The Role of Garage Door Springs:
Before we discuss the significance of winding bars, let's understand the critical role garage door springs play in the smooth operation of your garage door. Garage door springs, particularly torsion springs, are responsible for counterbalancing the weight of the door, making it easier to open and close manually or with a garage door opener. These springs are under immense tension and require careful handling during maintenance or replacement to avoid injuries or property damage.
Why Winding Bars are Essential for Winding Garage Door Springs:
Safety First: Winding garage door springs without the proper tools, such as winding bars, can be extremely dangerous. Winding bars are designed to fit securely into the winding cones of torsion springs, allowing you to safely apply torque to wind or unwind the springs without risking injury from spring tension release.
Precision and Control: Winding bars provide better control and precision when winding garage door springs compared to makeshift tools or improper techniques. This ensures that the springs are wound evenly and at the correct tension, preventing issues like uneven door operation or premature spring wear.
Minimize Risk of Damage: Using the wrong tools or incorrect winding methods can damage the garage door components, including the springs, cables, and opener system. Winding bars help prevent over-tightening or under-tightening of the springs, reducing the risk of costly repairs or replacements down the line.
Compatibility and Reliability: Professional-grade winding bars are designed to withstand the force exerted during spring winding, ensuring durability and reliability for repeated use.
Industry Recommended Practice: Garage door industry experts and technicians recommend using winding bars for winding torsion springs due to their safety features and effectiveness. Following industry best practices not only ensures safe repairs but also promotes long-lasting performance and functionality of your garage door system.
Where to Find Quality Winding Bars and Local Garage Door Parts in OKC and Edmond:
For homeowners and DIY enthusiasts in OKC and Edmond seeking reliable garage door parts, including high-quality winding bars, it's essential to turn to trusted local suppliers. Garage Door Parts OKC carries winding bars and can deliver them at the same time as your torsion spring.
Investing in winding bars for winding garage door springs is a smart decision that prioritizes safety, precision, and efficiency in OKC and Edmond. Remember, when it comes to garage door maintenance, safety should always come first, and using the right tools is key to achieving successful outcomes.

Garage door springs are a crucial component of any garage door system, providing the necessary counterbalance to facilitate smooth and effortless opening and closing. One might wonder, however, why there is such a variety of sizes when it comes to garage door springs. In this article, we delve into the reasons behind the diversity of garage door spring sizes and their importance in ensuring optimal performance and safety.
Understanding the Role of Garage Door Springs:
Before we delve into the nuances of different spring sizes, it's essential to grasp the fundamental role that garage door springs play in the operation of the door. Garage door springs are responsible for counterbalancing the weight of the door, making it easier to open and close manually or with the assistance of a garage door opener. Without properly functioning springs, the door would be incredibly difficult to operate and could pose a safety hazard.
Factors Influencing Spring Size:
Several factors influence the size and type of garage door springs required for a particular door. These factors include:
Door Weight: One of the primary determinants of spring size is the weight of the garage door itself. Heavier doors require stronger and larger springs to provide adequate counterbalance.
Door Height: The height of the garage door also plays a role in determining the size of the springs needed. Taller doors require longer springs to accommodate the increased distance they need to travel.
Variety of Garage Door Sizes:
Garage doors come in a wide range of sizes to accommodate different types of vehicles and architectural styles. Standard residential garage doors typically range from 8 to 18 feet in width and 7 to 8 feet in height. However, custom-sized doors are also common, especially in commercial and industrial settings. The diverse array of garage door sizes necessitates a corresponding variety of spring sizes to ensure optimal performance and safety for each door.
Importance of Correct Spring Sizing:
Using the correct size and type of garage door springs is crucial for several reasons:
Safety: Improperly sized springs can lead to issues such as door imbalance, erratic operation, and potential safety hazards. Using springs that are too small or weak for the door can result in premature wear and failure.
Performance: Properly sized springs ensure smooth and efficient operation of the garage door, minimizing strain on the opener and other components.
Longevity: Choosing the right springs based on door size and weight can help prolong their lifespan and reduce the frequency of repairs and replacements.
The diversity of garage door spring sizes is a reflection of the wide variety of garage door sizes and configurations found in residential, commercial, and industrial settings. Understanding the factors that influence spring size and the importance of correct sizing is essential for ensuring optimal performance, safety, and longevity of the garage door system. A two-car garage door is typically equipped with a two-spring system. When one spring breaks, it's not just about fixing the immediate issue; it's an opportunity to address a common recommendation in the world of garage door maintenance—replacing both springs. In this article, we'll explore the reasons behind this advice and why it's wise to have both springs on the same life cycle.
Tandem Functionality:
When one spring breaks, the other is forced to take on the full load. This added stress can accelerate wear and tear, making it likely that the remaining spring is nearing the end of its life cycle as well.
Symmetrical Wear and Tear:
Garage doors are designed to operate with a balanced distribution of weight. When one spring is replaced while the other remains, the system becomes asymmetrical. The new spring may have a different level of tension or wear compared to the older one, leading to uneven stress on the garage door components. This imbalance can result in premature wear on the new spring and other parts of the system.
Long-Term Cost Savings:
While it may seem cost-effective to replace only the broken spring, it's a short-term solution. Garage door systems are engineered to work most efficiently when both springs are in sync. Replacing both springs simultaneously not only ensures balanced functionality but also prevents the need for frequent repairs and replacements, saving homeowners money in the long run.
Safety and Reliability:
A garage door operating with one new and one old spring can be unpredictable and potentially hazardous. The door may become difficult to control manually, leading to safety concerns. By replacing both springs, homeowners can enjoy a safer and more reliable garage door operation, minimizing the risk of accidents or unexpected failures.
Efficient Preventive Maintenance:
Treating the replacement of both garage door springs as a preventive maintenance measure is a proactive approach. Rather than waiting for the second spring to break, homeowners can address both springs simultaneously, ensuring that the entire garage door system is in optimal condition.
In the world of garage door maintenance, the recommendation to replace both springs when one breaks is rooted in a desire for balance, symmetry, and long-term cost savings. By addressing both springs simultaneously, homeowners not only ensure the efficient operation of their garage doors but also contribute to the overall safety and reliability of this essential home feature. Embracing this practice is a proactive step toward maintaining a harmonious and well-functioning garage door system. You can shop for and buy garage door torsion springs right here in Oklahoma City (OKC), Edmond, and surrouding areas.

Your garage door is a vital component of your home, providing security, convenience, and protection for your vehicles and belongings. Whether you're in the bustling city of Oklahoma City or the charming suburb of Edmond, the importance of maintaining your garage door remains the same. Among the various moving parts that contribute to the seamless operation of your garage door, the springs play a crucial role. Regular maintenance, including lubrication, is essential to ensure these springs function optimally and extend their lifespan.
Why Lubricate Garage Door Springs?
Reduced Friction:
Garage door springs, whether torsion or extension, are under immense tension when the door is in motion. Lubricating them reduces friction between the coils, preventing wear and tear. This, in turn, ensures smooth and quiet operation.
Prevention of Rust and Corrosion:
Springs are often exposed to the elements, especially in areas like Oklahoma City where weather conditions can vary. Lubrication creates a protective barrier, shielding the springs from moisture and atmospheric conditions, preventing rust and corrosion.
Extended Lifespan:
Proper lubrication significantly contributes to the longevity of your garage door springs. By reducing friction and preventing corrosion, you can extend the life of the springs, ultimately saving you money on premature replacements.
Enhanced Performance:
Well-lubricated springs contribute to the overall performance of your garage door system. A smoothly operating door not only adds convenience to your daily routine but also minimizes the risk of malfunctions and unexpected breakdowns.
Lubricating your garage door springs in OKC and Edmond is a simple yet essential maintenance task that can greatly impact the performance and longevity of your garage door system.

In the bustling cityscapes of Oklahoma City and Edmond, where time is a precious commodity, the convenience of an automatic garage door opener can be a game-changer for homeowners. Have you ever wondered about the magic behind the effortless rise and fall of garage doors with just the push of a button? In this article, we'll delve into the inner workings of automatic garage door openers, demystifying the technology that adds ease to everyday life.
The Heart of the System: The Motor
At the core of every automatic garage door opener lies a powerful electric motor. This motor, often situated in the center of the garage ceiling, is the workhorse that drives the entire system. In Oklahoma City and Edmond, where weather conditions can be unpredictable, having a reliable motor is crucial to ensure smooth operation despite temperature fluctuations.
The Role of Remote Control
Imagine arriving home in Edmond after a long day's work, and with a simple click of a remote control, your garage door opens, welcoming you with open arms. The remote control is a key player in this process. It sends a signal to the motor, instructing it to either lift or lower the garage door. The convenience of operating your garage door from the comfort of your car becomes particularly valuable during inclement weather or late-night arrivals.
Safety Features: Sensors and Reversing Mechanisms
Ensuring the safety of your family and property is a top priority for any homeowner. Automatic garage door openers are equipped with sensors that detect obstructions in the door's path. In compliance with safety regulations, these sensors prompt the door to reverse its course if an obstacle is detected. This feature is especially crucial in busy areas of Oklahoma City and Edmond, where pedestrian traffic around homes is common.
Tracks and Rollers: The Silent Supporters
As the motor activates, it sets in motion a system of tracks and rollers that guide the upward and downward movement of the garage door. The smooth operation of these components is vital for a quiet and efficient opening and closing process. Routine maintenance, such as lubrication and occasional inspections, is recommended to ensure these silent supporters continue their job seamlessly.
As we explore the inner workings of automatic garage door openers, it becomes clear that these devices are more than just conveniences; they are sophisticated systems designed to make life smoother and safer. Whether you're in the heart of Oklahoma City or the suburban charm of Edmond, the technology behind automatic garage door openers continues to evolve, promising homeowners a future of even greater convenience and peace of mind. Garage doors are an integral part of our homes, and the components that keep them functioning smoothly are often overlooked. One such crucial element is the garage door rollers. Whether you reside in the bustling city of Oklahoma City or the charming suburb of Edmond, selecting the right garage door rollers is paramount for maintaining the longevity and performance of your garage door. In this comprehensive buying guide, we'll explore the types of garage door rollers, factors to consider, and offer practical tips for residents in both Oklahoma City and Edmond.
Understanding the Types of Garage Door Rollers:
Nylon Rollers:
Nylon rollers are known for their smooth and quiet operation. They are an excellent choice for homeowners in Edmond and OKC who prioritize a peaceful neighborhood environment. These rollers are also durable and resistant to rust, making them suitable for various weather conditions.
Steel Rollers:
Steel rollers are robust and capable of handling heavy garage doors. For residents in Oklahoma City, where extreme weather conditions are common, steel rollers offer durability and reliability. However, they may generate more noise compared to nylon rollers.
Plastic Rollers:
Plastic rollers are an economical option, but they may not be as durable as nylon or steel. They are suitable for lighter garage doors and can be an ideal choice for homeowners on a budget.
Factors to Consider When Choosing Garage Door Rollers:
Weight Capacity:
Consider the weight capacity of the rollers to ensure they can handle the specific requirements of your garage door. This is especially crucial in areas like Oklahoma City, where garage doors may need to withstand temperature variations throughout the year.
Ball-Bearing Construction:
Opt for rollers with ball-bearing construction for smoother and quieter operation. This feature is essential for homeowners in Edmond, where a serene suburban setting is cherished.
Climate Considerations:
Take into account the local climate when choosing garage door rollers. For instance, residents in Oklahoma City may want to select rollers that can withstand the heat of summer and the cold of winter.
DIY Roller Replacement Tips:
Replacing garage door rollers is a task that homeowners in both Oklahoma City and Edmond can tackle themselves. Here's a step-by-step guide:
Secure the Door: Ensure the garage door is securely in the open position, and disconnect the power to the garage door opener.
Remove Old Rollers: Use a wrench to loosen the nuts on the bracket holding the roller. Slide the old roller out and replace it with the new one. NEVER remove the nuts on the bottom bracket. You may need to bend the track slightly to yank the bottom roller out.
Secure the New Rollers: Tighten the nuts on the bracket to secure the new roller in place.
Test the Door: Reconnect the power to the garage door opener and test the door's operation to ensure smooth movement.
Local Suppliers and Installation Services:
For Oklahoma City and Edmond residents seeking high-quality garage door rollers, consider reaching out to local suppliers or garage door service providers.
Maintenance Tips for Longevity:
To prolong the life of your garage door rollers, follow these maintenance tips:
Regular Lubrication: Apply a silicone-based lubricant to the rollers to reduce friction and ensure smooth operation.
Scheduled Inspections: Schedule routine inspections to identify and address any issues promptly. This is particularly important in humid conditions common in Oklahoma City.
By choosing the right garage door rollers and following these tips, homeowners in Oklahoma City and Edmond can ensure their garage doors operate efficiently, enhancing the overall functionality and curb appeal of their homes. Remember, a well-maintained garage door not only provides convenience but also adds value to your property.

When it comes to the seamless operation of your garage door, the unsung heroes are undoubtedly the garage door springs. These seemingly simple components play a crucial role in the smooth functioning of your garage door, lifting and lowering it with ease. However, even the most reliable springs can face challenges, and one of the common issues is their propensity to break. In this blog post, we'll delve into the reasons behind why garage door springs break and explore ways to ensure their longevity.
Normal Wear and Tear:
Like any mechanical component, garage door springs are subject to wear and tear over time. They bear the weight of the garage door as it opens and closes, enduring constant tension and pressure. Eventually, this continuous cycle can lead to fatigue and, ultimately, breakage.
Lack of Regular Maintenance:
Neglecting regular maintenance is a surefire way to reduce the lifespan of your garage door springs. Routine inspections and ubrication go a long way. Without proper care, springs become more susceptible to corrosion, rust, and stress, increasing the likelihood of breakage.
Poor-Quality Springs:
The quality of the garage door springs you install can significantly impact their durability. Opting for low-quality or incorrect springs that don't match the weight and size specifications of your garage door may lead to premature failure. Investing in high-quality, appropriately sized springs can make a substantial difference in their performance and longevity.
Extreme Temperature Fluctuations:
Garage door springs are sensitive to temperature changes. Exposure to extreme heat or cold can cause the metal to expand or contract, affecting the spring's structural integrity. Over time, these temperature-induced changes can weaken the springs, making them more prone to breakage.
Rust and Corrosion:
The garage environment is not always favorable for metal components. Humidity, moisture, and exposure to the elements can contribute to rust and corrosion, compromising the strength of the springs. Regularly applying a rust inhibitor and keeping the garage well-ventilated can help mitigate this risk.
Understanding why garage door springs break is crucial for homeowners looking to maintain a reliable and safe garage door system. By addressing issues like normal wear and tear, lack of maintenance, poor-quality springs, temperature fluctuations, rust, corrosion, and using the incorrect spring size, you can extend the lifespan of your garage door springs and enjoy smooth, trouble-free operation for years to come. Regular inspections, timely maintenance, and investing in high-quality components are key steps in ensuring your garage door springs stand the test of time.

Your garage door serves as a gateway to your home, providing security, convenience, and curb appeal. Yet, over time, wear and tear can take a toll on its structural integrity, leading to issues such as sagging and instability. Enter the unsung hero of garage door enhancement – the garage door strut. In this blog post, we delve into the world of garage door struts, exploring their benefits, installation, and how they can transform your garage door experience.
1. The Basics of Garage Door Struts:
Garage door struts are horizontal reinforcements designed to add strength and stability to the door panel. Made from durable materials such as steel, they act as a support system to prevent bowing and sagging, especially in larger garage doors.
2. Benefits of Installing Garage Door Struts:
Structural Reinforcement: Struts provide essential support to the garage door structure, ensuring it can withstand the test of time.
Noise Reduction: By minimizing vibrations, struts contribute to a quieter and smoother garage door operation.
Prevention of Damage: Struts help distribute the weight of the door evenly, reducing stress on individual panels and preventing premature wear.
3. Material:
Opt for struts crafted from high-quality materials like steel.
4. Tools and Equipment:
Before diving into the installation process, gather the necessary tools and equipment. Most installations require basic tools such as a drill, self-tapping screws, and a ladder.
5. Step-by-Step Installation:
a. Measure and mark: Begin by measuring the width of your garage door and marking the areas where the struts will be installed.
b. Secure the strut: Attach the strut to the door panels while ensuring a snug, secure, and level fit.
c. Repeat the process: Install additional struts horizontally across the door, following the manufacturer's guidelines. Be aware of how much weight is being added to the door as too much additional weight may require stronger torsion springs.
In conclusion, garage door struts are a simple yet effective solution to common garage door issues. By reinforcing your door's structure, these struts can extend its lifespan, enhance its performance, and contribute to a quieter and more efficient operation. Consider investing in a high-quality garage door strut to unlock the full potential of your garage door, providing both reliability and peace of mind.
Upgrade your garage door experience today with a robust and reliable garage door strut – the key to a stronger, quieter, and more durable garage door.

Your garage door's track radius plays a crucial role in its smooth operation and overall functionality. The track radius determines the curve that the horizontal track makes, affecting how the door moves along its path. In this article, we will delve into the significance of garage door track radius, specifically focusing on the options available, namely the 12" and 15" radii.
The Basics of Garage Door Track Radius:
The garage door track radius refers to the curvature of the horizontal track that guides the door as it opens and closes. It's a critical factor in ensuring that the door fits seamlessly within the available space. Two common track radii are 12" and 15", each serving specific purposes based on the requirements of the garage door system.
12" Track Radius:
Compact Spaces: A 12" track radius is ideal for garages with limited overhead space. If your garage has a low ceiling or limited headroom, a 12" radius track allows for a tighter curve, optimizing the use of available vertical space.
Residential Applications: Many residential garage doors are designed to work efficiently with a 12" track radius. This choice is often more aesthetically pleasing in homes where a lower profile is desired.
Standard Installations: In standard residential installations, a 12" radius track is a common choice due to its compatibility with most garage door types and sizes.
15" Track Radius:
High-Lift Systems: Garages with higher ceilings benefit from a 15" track radius, especially when using a high-lift system. This configuration allows the door to travel vertically before making the horizontal curve, accommodating the additional space.
Commercial and Industrial Use: Larger and heavier garage doors, often found in commercial and industrial settings, may require the stability provided by a 15" track radius. This ensures smooth and reliable operation for doors with increased weight and dimensions.
Custom Installations: Some unique garage door setups, such as custom-designed doors or unconventional architectural configurations, may demand the use of a 15" radius track to meet specific requirements.
Choosing the Right Track Radius:
When deciding between a 12" and 15" track radius, several factors come into play:
Ceiling Height: Consider the available vertical space in your garage. If you have a high ceiling, a 15" radius may be more appropriate.
Door Size and Weight: Larger and heavier doors often benefit from a 15" radius track for added stability and smooth operation.
Architectural Constraints: Unique architectural features or custom designs may dictate the choice of a specific track radius.
Budget: While both radius options are viable, your budget may influence the final decision. Standard residential setups often work well with a 12" radius, offering a cost-effective solution.
In the realm of garage door systems, the track radius is a critical element that should not be overlooked. Whether opting for a 12" or 15" radius, understanding the specific needs of your garage space, door type, and operational requirements is key to ensuring optimal performance and longevity. Choose wisely, and enjoy the convenience and reliability of a garage door that seamlessly fits into your lifestyle.

Your garage door is more than just a convenience; it's a crucial component of your home's security and functionality. However, without proper safety measures, it can pose potential risks, especially to your family and pets. Follow these guidelines to ensure the safety of your loved ones around the garage door.
1. Educate Your Family
Start by educating your family members, especially children, about the potential dangers associated with garage doors. Emphasize that the garage door is not a toy, and playing around it is unsafe. Teach them about the controls and explain the importance of respecting the garage door's operation.
2. Install Photoelectric Sensors
Modern garage doors are always equipped with photoelectric sensors that detect objects or people in the door's path. These sensors automatically trigger the door to reverse if something is in the way. Regularly test these sensors by placing an object in the door's path and ensuring the door reverses upon detection.
3. Test the Auto-Reverse Feature
All garage doors should be equipped with an auto-reverse feature. Test this feature regularly by placing a small object, like a roll of paper towels, on the ground in the door's path. If the door does not reverse upon contact, it may indicate a malfunction, and professional assistance is needed.
4. Keep Remotes Out of Reach
If you have a garage door remote control, keep it out of the reach of children. Explain that the remote is not a toy and should only be used under adult supervision. Consider a keypad entry system as an alternative for family members.
5. Secure Access to Control Panels
If your garage door has a wall-mounted control panel, ensure it is installed high enough to be out of reach of small children. Consider using a security code to prevent unauthorized access. Educate older children about the responsible use of the control panel.
6. Regular Maintenance Checks
Perform regular maintenance checks on your garage door to ensure all components are in good working condition. Look for signs of wear and tear on cables, springs, and rollers. Address any issues promptly to prevent accidents.
7. Pet Safety Measures
Pets, especially curious ones, may be at risk around a moving garage door. When operating the door, ensure your pets are safely inside the house or away from the garage area. Additionally, be cautious when opening or closing the door, as pets may try to dart through.
8. Teach Emergency Procedures
In case of a malfunction or power outage, it's essential that everyone in your household knows how to manually operate the garage door. Familiarize them with the emergency release mechanism and practice opening and closing the door manually.
9. Consult Professionals for Repairs
If you notice any issues with the garage door, such as strange noises, uneven movement, or malfunctions, it's crucial to consult a professional for repairs. Attempting to fix complex issues without the necessary expertise can lead to further safety risks.
10. Invest in a Safety and Maintenance Inspection
Consider scheduling a professional safety and maintenance inspection annually. A trained technician can identify potential hazards, make necessary adjustments, and ensure your garage door operates safely and efficiently.
By prioritizing garage door safety, you not only protect your family and pets from potential accidents but also ensure the long-term functionality of this essential household feature. A few simple precautions and regular maintenance checks can go a long way in maintaining a secure and safe garage environment.
10/23/2023
Your garage door requires regular maintenance to ensure smooth operation and extend its lifespan. Performing simple do-it-yourself maintenance tasks not only saves you money but also prevents unexpected issues down the road. Follow this step-by-step guide to keep your garage door in top-notch condition.
Step 1: Safety First
Before you start any maintenance tasks, ensure your safety by disconnecting the garage door opener. This prevents the door from accidentally opening or closing during your maintenance activities.
Step 2: Visual Inspection
Carefully examine the entire garage door system. Look for loose bolts, frayed cables, and signs of wear on the springs. Inspect the rollers and tracks for any debris that may impede smooth movement.
Step 3: Lubrication
Proper lubrication is crucial for the smooth operation of your garage door. Apply a silicone-based spray lubricant to the rollers, hinges, springs, and tracks. Be sure to wipe off any excess to prevent accumulation of dirt and grime. Never use grease on your garage door parts.
Step 4: Tighten Hardware
Use a wrench to tighten any loose bolts and nuts on the garage door and its components. Pay special attention to hinges, brackets, and track hardware. A secure connection enhances the door's stability and functionality.
Step 5: Check and Adjust the Tracks
Inspect the tracks for alignment. Misaligned tracks can cause the door to operate unevenly. If you notice any issues, use a rubber mallet to gently tap the tracks back into place. Ensure the tracks are plumb and parallel.
Step 6: Inspect and Test the Auto-Reverse Feature
Modern garage doors are equipped with an auto-reverse feature for safety. Place an object on the ground in the door's path and close the door. It should reverse upon hitting the obstruction. If not, consult your owner's manual for instructions on adjusting the sensitivity settings.
Step 7: Test Balance and Tension
With the garage door closed, disconnect the opener and manually lift the door. It should move smoothly with little resistance. If the door is difficult to lift or doesn't stay in place when partially open, the springs may need adjustment.
Step 8: Inspect Weather Stripping
Check the weather stripping along the bottom of the door for wear and tear. Replace any damaged or brittle weather stripping to maintain a proper seal and keep out drafts, dust, and pests.
Step 9: Clean and Paint (If Necessary)
Remove dirt and grime from the exterior of your garage door using a mild detergent and a soft brush. If your door is made of wood and shows signs of peeling or cracking, consider repainting or sealing it to protect against the elements.
Step 10: Schedule Professional Maintenance Annually
While regular DIY maintenance is essential, scheduling a professional inspection and tune-up annually ensures that potential issues are addressed before they become major problems. A trained technician can identify and fix issues that may not be apparent to the untrained eye.
By dedicating a little time to DIY garage door maintenance, you not only ensure the reliable performance of your garage door but also contribute to the safety and security of your home. Following these steps regularly will keep your garage door in optimal condition for years to come.

The visible outer layer of the garage door, panels come in various materials such as steel, wood, and aluminum. These panels not only contribute to the door's appearance but also provide structural integrity.
2. Springs: Counterbalancing the Weight
Garage door springs, typically either extension or torsion springs, counterbalance the door's weight, making it easier to open and close. Understanding the type and condition of your springs is crucial for maintaining proper functionality.
3. Rollers: Keeping Things Moving Smoothly
Rollers, often made of nylon or steel, attach to the sides of the door and allow it to move smoothly along the tracks. Regular lubrication and maintenance of rollers ensure a quiet and efficient operation.
4. Tracks: Guiding the Way
Tracks, usually made of steel, guide the garage door as it moves up and down. Misaligned or damaged tracks can lead to operational issues, making regular inspection and adjustments important for smooth performance.
5. Hinges: Enabling Flexibility
Hinges connect the panels and allow the door to bend as it moves. Regular inspection of hinges ensures that the door can flex without causing damage, contributing to the overall longevity of the system.
6. Cables: Adding Stability
Cables work in conjunction with the springs to support the weight of the door. Frayed or damaged cables can compromise the door's safety and should be addressed promptly.
7. Opener: The Power Behind the Operation
The garage door opener is the mechanical device that automates the opening and closing of the door. Today's openers often come with smart technology features for added convenience and security.

You can determine the proper spring size for your garage door using two main methods. If your door was operating correctly and wasn't too heavy or too light when the springs were intact, you can simply replicate the springs you already have on the door. The first method is to measure your current spring size and order the same size. You need three numbers to properly size garage springs: the WIRE SIZE, the INSIDE DIAMETER, and the LENGTH of the coils (length does not include the two end pieces, called cones). You will find a video guide above for measuring your torsion springs.
The second method is to determine the proper spring size using IPPT (inch-pounds-per-turn). The numbers needed to make this calculation are the door weight, height, garage track radius (12" or 15"), and the number of springs you're using. You can run an online search for this method, and you will find websites that allow you to plug these numbers in (along with help on how to find the track radius, which is simple). Once you plug these numbers in, their calculator will show you the spring sizes that will work for your door.

Winding and unwinding garage door torsion springs can be a very dangerous activity. There are some basic precautions everyone must take to minimize the risk. You primarily need to protect against the possibility that the winding bars will slip out of your hands while engaged with a wound spring. In this event, the bars will be violently flung down and out.
Firstly, you MUST wear eye protection capable of absorbing a rapid blow from the bars. Second, your body MUST stay clear of the winding bars as you are actively winding or unwinding the springs. We recommend you stand on the outside of the springs entirely. If you're winding the spring on the right side of the door, for example, you'd stand between the winding bars and the garage door tracks on the right (as opposed to in front of the spring itself). This will keep your body clear of the spring should it do something crazy, and mostly out of the way of the winding bars (hands remain exposed, but mostly nothing else).
Some other precautions you can take include the use of a sturdy ladder, a second person to assist and monitor the situation from a safe place, never using tools besides winding bars to wind springs, and keeping all kids and pets away from the garage in case a winding bar gets flung out.

If you have ever looked into garage door springs, you'll notice there are a million different variations. The first reaction to this is to wonder why sizing can't be simplified and standardized. The problem has to do with the varying weights of garage doors and the path in which they open. The garage springs have to do two things. They have to absorb the weight of the door to make opening possible, but they also have to keep the door heavy enough that it closes just as easily. Much like most things in life, it's a balancing act.
If there was a standard spring size, but non-standard garage door weights, you could never achieve the balance needed to both easily open the door AND keep it closed when it needs to be. The springs have to be wound a specific number of times because they have to turn the cable drums a specific number of times to lift the door a specific amount of feet. Because the lift distance is fairly standardized, and therefore the drum spins are standardized, and therefore the spring spins are standardized, the only thing that can vary to accomodate the different weights of garage doors is the size and length of the springs.

Garage door springs supply the upward force needed to allow your opener to lift your garage door. Even a standard two car door could weigh nearly 200lbs. Without a system to counterbalance this weight, your automatic opener would need to be the size of, basically, a jet engine! The spring system delivers torque by way of tension. When the garage door is closed, the springs are wound to maximum tension. As your garage door rises, the springs naturally want to unwind. This unwinding pressure turns a tube that is attached by wires to your garage door. This torque turns the tube and helps lift the garage door.
